Exploration Game Analysis: The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+

A recent addition to the Nintendo Switch is The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+. This game incorporates levels in a very interesting way by having the levels randomly generate every time you start a new game along with the hundreds of items provided. This action-adventure game incorporates exploration as well as an action packed adventure with different enemies in your wake that you must destroy.

For the story, Isaac's mom is told by "god" to sacrifice her son in order to show how loyal she is. Isaac, in fear, finds a trap door under a rug in his room and right as his mom opens the door he jumps in. As you progress in the game you unlock different endings and more secrets about Isaac and the other characters you can play as.

At the beginning of each level, you can only see the start room plus some rooms around you. You must enter a room and defeat whoever is in there. Once defeated, the doors will open allowing you to continue onward. The goal is to find the boss room in order to ascend, or in this case descend. If you die, you can input the code given to you and play the same level again.

When it comes to rewarding the player, the game gives out various items that can help assist you. Primarily you get items in the shop but you can also get them in one of the devils rooms or in the crown rooms. The only problem that I have with this is that sometimes the game will give you tons of coins and no keys or tons of keys and no coins. The only way into the shop, however, is with a key so I mainly try to avoid them. In terms of a penalty, if you take an item from the devil's room, you lose a heart in trade for a powerful item. When entering a room, all doors will lock until all the enemies in the room are dead. If you run into an enemy, then you lose half a heart and once you lose all your hearts you die.

Overall, I believe that this game has wonderful level design from the way you have to find the boss room's as well as having each level randomly generate and even be able to replay the same level layouts. The amount of replay ability is enormous since the levels are randomized. Even if you finish the game you still have to unlock the other endings as well as collecting all the items. If I had to change something it would be the difficulty of some monsters on the higher level, or in this case the lower rooms. However, if they did that then the game may not be as fun as it currently is due to he difficulty of each enemy. I would also change the descriptions of the items since it can be very difficult to know what each item is so maybe they could have it display key words instead since due to the uncertainty I have to look up what an item is. Out of ten I give this game, in terms of level design and mechanics, an eight.
